Alaska (October 28, 2008) Alaska Senator Ted Stevens’ conviction may have opened a door for conservative candidate Robert Bird. Stevens was found guilty yesterday of lying about gifts he received totaling over a quarter million dollars. Bird wants his seat.

Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Stevens’ conviction marked the end of his career and signaled that the GOP would not try to mount an effort to hold onto the seat he has occupied for 40 years.

Stevens’ conviction of corruption leaves Bob Bird as the only viable conservative candidate for US Senate. Alaskans are faced with Democrat Mark Begich and Ted Stevens, or constitutional candidate Bob Bird, running on the Alaskan Independence Party ticket. With less than one week until the election Bird is calling for massive national support to win the seat from which Senator Stevens refuses to step down. However, Bird needs key endorsements, press attention and money to be successful.

Democrats have long understood that Alaska held the key to an additional Senate seat and have poured millions of dollars into the state promoting Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid’s protégé Mark Begich. This reality was largely ignored by the various independent groups in the lower 48 states. Bird is calling for a final full court press by national independent voters and conservative Republicans to defeat the Democrats in this important Senate race.

Robert Bird has promised to caucus with Senate Republicans to prevent the Democrats from obtaining a filibuster-proof bloc of 60 Senators. Independent voters need to understand that the only thing worse than a dysfunctional two-party system is any form of a one-party system.

Bird’s platform addresses every key issue from a strictly Constitutional perspective on his web site at www.BirdForSenate.com, which provides a link for fund contributions his campaign says are desperately needed. Bird is seeking at least $30,000 by Wednesday and believes $100,000 by the end of week will mean victory.
